# How many weeks are in a lifetime?

> An average lifetime is roughly 4,000 weeks. A life of 77 years works out at about 4,000 weeks, 80 years at 4,160 weeks and 90 years at 4,680 weeks, counting 52 weeks per year. Counting exact calendar weeks (365.25 days per year divided by 7) adds about two weeks per decade.

## How many weeks are there per lifespan?

The table shows the number of weeks and days for four lifespans. The middle column uses the simple rule of 52 weeks per year, which is how life calendars are drawn. The exact column divides the real number of days by 7.

| Lifespan | Weeks (52 per year) | Exact calendar weeks | Days (365.25 per year) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 70 years | 3,640 | 3,652.5 | 25,568 |
| 80 years | 4,160 | 4,174.3 | 29,220 |
| 90 years | 4,680 | 4,696.1 | 32,873 |
| 100 years | 5,200 | 5,217.9 | 36,525 |

The calculation is short. For weeks at 52 per year: years × 52, so 90 × 52 = 4,680. For days: years × 365.25, so 90 × 365.25 = 32,872.5, rounded to 32,873. For exact weeks: days ÷ 7, so 32,872.5 ÷ 7 = 4,696.1.

## Why do life calendars count 52 weeks per year?

A calendar year is not a whole number of weeks. 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day; a leap year is 52 weeks and 2 days. A life calendar ignores those leftover days on purpose. That way every row of the grid has the same 52 boxes and every row starts on your birthday.

The cost is small. Over 90 years the leftover days add up to about 16 weeks, a third of one row. For a picture of a whole life that difference is invisible; for an exact count, use the [age in weeks calculator](https://mylifeinpixels.com/how-many-weeks-have-i-lived/).

## What is the "4,000 weeks" idea?

"Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals" is a 2021 book by Oliver Burkeman. Its starting point is that a human life is absurdly short when you express it in weeks: about 4,000 of them if you live to 77. Burkeman's argument is not that you should squeeze more into those weeks, but that you should choose what to leave out.

The picture that goes with the number is older. In 2014 Tim Urban published "Your Life in Weeks" on Wait But Why, with a grid of 52 columns by 90 rows. That grid of 4,680 boxes is the one My Life in Pixels draws for you.

## How many of those weeks are already behind you?

That depends on your age. A rough guide, counting 52 weeks per year on a grid of 90 years:

- At 25 you have lived 1,300 weeks and 3,380 are still open.
- At 40 you have lived 2,080 weeks and 2,600 are still open.
- At 65 you have lived 3,380 weeks and 1,300 are still open.

The halfway point of a 90-year grid is your 45th birthday: 2,340 weeks on each side.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many weeks are in 80 years?

There are 4,160 weeks in 80 years when you count 52 weeks per year (80 × 52). Counting exact calendar weeks gives about 4,174, because a year is 52 weeks plus one or two days.

### How many weeks are in 90 years?

There are 4,680 weeks in 90 years at 52 weeks per year (90 × 52). In exact calendar weeks that is about 4,696. A life grid of 52 columns by 90 rows therefore has 4,680 boxes.

### How many weeks does the average person live?

Worldwide, life expectancy at birth is a little over 70 years, which is about 3,800 weeks. In most of Western Europe it is a little over 80 years, which is about 4,200 weeks.

### Where does the number 4,000 weeks come from?

From Oliver Burkeman's 2021 book "Four Thousand Weeks". 4,000 weeks divided by 52 is about 77 years, close to the average lifespan in many developed countries, and a round number is easier to remember than 4,160 or 4,680.

### How many days are in a lifetime?

At 365.25 days per year, 80 years is 29,220 days and 90 years is 32,873 days. The extra quarter day per year accounts for leap years.
