Privacy
My Life in Pixels does not collect personal data. Your date of birth, name and milestones are stored only in your own browser. There are no accounts, no cookies and no advertising trackers. A share link shows your name and percentage in its preview, and nothing is stored on our side. The "Reset my data" button deletes everything.
What do you enter, and where does it go?
You can enter a date of birth, an optional name and up to 60 milestones with a label, a color and dates. All of it is saved in your browser’s localStorage, on your own device, under the key mlip:v1. The site has no backend and no database, so there is nowhere for that data to go. The age in weeks calculator saves the date of birth in the same place, so the life grid can use it.
Your choice of light or dark theme and the fact that you closed the language banner are saved in the same way.
How do share links work?
When you click “Copy share link”, your grid is compressed and placed in the link itself, in the part after the # sign. Browsers never send that part of an address to a server, so your date of birth and milestones do not appear in server logs or in analytics.
Two things sit before the # sign, so that apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage or Slack can show a preview: your name and the percentage of your life on the grid. When a link is opened or previewed, our server reads those two values to fill in the preview text and image. It does not store them.
Anyone who has the link can see the grid it contains, including the date of birth, the name and the milestones. Only share it with people you would tell those things to. A link cannot be withdrawn, because there is no copy on our side to delete.
Do you use cookies or analytics?
We set no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. To see how the site is used, we use two web analytics services, neither of which uses cookies or stores anything on your device: Clicky, in its privacy mode with anonymized IP addresses, and Nvivio, which is hosted in the European Union. They receive the address of the page you are on, the page you came from and technical details such as your browser and type of device. For a few actions, such as “a grid was exported”, only the name of the action is sent.
Neither of them ever receives a date of birth, a label, a name or the content of a share link. Clicky is given the address of the page without the part after the # sign. Nvivio is given the full address, so on any page that carries a shared grid it is not loaded at all.
At the bottom of every page there is a badge linking to Nvivio, which earns us a discount. The script that checks whether the badge is visible reports the address of the page and nothing else, and it too stays off the pages that carry a shared grid.
Who hosts the site?
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address in order to deliver the pages and to protect the site against abuse. We do not combine that data with anything else, and we could not link it to your grid if we wanted to, because your grid never reaches the server.
What are your rights?
Because your data stays on your own device, you are in control of it: the “Reset my data” button in the tool deletes it, and so does clearing the site data in your browser. If you have a question about privacy, or want to use your rights under the GDPR, write to hello@mylifeinpixels.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority.
Who is responsible?
